On Saturday 6th June 2009 Britain’s most well known classic horse race will once again be run at Epsom Downs in Surrey. The Classic is steeped in History and remains on of the top society occasions full of colour and noise. Top Hats, Champagne and Designer Dresses adorn the Premier enclosures whilst Picnics, Open Top Buses and Jazz Bands line the inside of the course.

This event catches the public’s imagination in a similar way to that of the Aintree Grand National. This is a race for the so called ‘once a year punter’ warranting an office sweepstake, run over a mile and half traditionally on the first weekend in June. Just the name of the race evokes memories of great horses, brilliant trainers and talented jockeys.

Whatever their age, just ask anyone and they will have a favourite moment or particular recollection of the Derby. Whether it be as far back as legendary jockey Sir Gordon Richards finally winning at his 28th attempt aboard Pinza in 1953 or bang up to date with Frankie Dettori winning the race at his 15th attempt in 2007 aboard Authorized, it will mean just as much.

Who could ever forget the brilliant Sea Bird II winning in 1965 or Nijinsky recording the second leg of his Triple Crown in 1970? Many still recall the legends that are Mill Reef winning in 1971 or Shergar triumphing by the widest ever winning margin (10 lengths) under Walter Swinburn in 1981. The flying Dancing Brave, in second, five years later just failing to catch Shahrastani having come from a mile back or Nashwan and Willie Carson striding on powerfully up the Epsom straight in 1989.

The great names of Flat racing including trainer Vincent O’Brien and jockey Lester Piggott, who triumphed a record nine times, have all tasted success in this unique test for horse and jockey. Epsom’s twist and turns, Tattenham Corner and its cambered home straight make this a race like no other and you must have a well balanced horse to win The Derby. The race is a clear benchmark of a champion racehorse with many going on to try their luck in the top International races at the end of the season.

The 2008 Epsom Derby Result

New Approach from Ireland became the 229th Epsom Derby hero on Saturday, 7th June 2008, winning for trainer Jim Bolger and jockey Kevin Manning.  Owned by HRH Princess Haya of Jordan, the 5/1 second favourite beat the Michael Stoute trained Tartan Bearer, ridden by Ryan Moore into second place by ½ length.  The 7/2 Favourite Casual Conquest a further 4 ½ lengths back in third.

New Approach, having been keen early on was settled towards the rear in the early stages as the rank outsider Maidstone Mixture took them along. Once into the straight, it was Bashkirov who led briefly before the placed horses took over through the final two furlongs.  New Approach staged a persistent challenge up the inside rail to lead in the final furlong staying on strongly to win.

Prior to the Derby New Approach had won four times as a two year old before returning in May 2008, running second in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas behind Henrythenavigator on both occasions.

Post Derby, New Approach went on to compete in three of the top Flat races (all at a Mile and a quarter) during the remainder of the season.  Firstly finishing third behind, the four year old, Duke Of Marmalade in the Juddmonte International Stakes at Newmarket in August.  The Three Year Old son by Galileo, then won The Irish Champion Stakes at short odds (8/13 Favourite) at Leopardstown beating, the second placed 50/1 shot, Traffic Guard.  New Approach then rounded off a fine season with victory, as the 6/5 Favourite, in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket in October beating Twice Over.  New Approach has since been retired to stud boasting a career record of 11 starts with eight victories, two seconds and a third.
